What ꢱ means
The consonant sa in the Saurashtra alphabet — a letter, not a message. Inside a word it supplies the s sound; the marks around it set the syllable. Sent alone, it is a character sample, not a reaction.
The Saurashtra alphabet is an abugida — a writing system where every consonant letter carries a built-in vowel. Small dependent marks swap that vowel for another, and a virama, a little silencer mark, cancels it. So ꢱ's reading depends on its neighbours, not on the glyph alone.
What does it mean when someone sends ꢱ?
Usually they are showing you the letter or the script itself. There is no slang reading to hunt for. If ꢱ arrived alone, the point was the character — a sample or a keyboard test, not a hidden message.
Who receives it matters. Saurashtris taught in the native alphabet read sa at once; those raised writing the language in Tamil, Telugu, Devanagari or Roman letters may not recognise their own s. When in doubt, spell the word out.
When was the Saurashtra alphabet created?
The alphabet dates to the 1880s; the language was written far earlier. A fifth-century inscription at Mandasor records a silk-weaver guild that may be ancestral to today's Saurashtri community. Sources then show Saurashtri written in a Telugu-based script through the 17th and 18th centuries, before this dedicated alphabet appeared.
Saurashtri is a cousin of Gujarati whose speakers migrated from the Lāṭa region of Gujarat south through Devagiri and Vijayanagara into Tamil country. The new alphabet gave a well-travelled language a writing home of its own.
Specialist heritage register — sending ꢱ signals Saurashtra literacy, not emoji play.
To a phone without the font it is a hollow box; even rendered, pair it with transliteration.
Drift: Writing stays plural: Devanagari was adopted for Saurashtri in 1920, and Tamil, Roman and native-script schooling all continue. As of 2026, a community academy still teaches the language and its letters as preservation work.

Questions people ask
3Is ꢱ an emoji?
No. It is a text letter in the Saurashtra alphabet, not a picture reaction.
Why does the Saurashtra character show as a box?
A font gap, most likely. The active font has no Saurashtra glyph, so the system draws a placeholder; switch fonts and the letter returns.
Is Saurashtra the same as Gujarati?
No. It is a related Indo-Aryan language with its own alphabet; a Gujarati letter is not a substitute for ꢱ.
