SignWriting Brush Between

273/672

𝤐 marks brushing contact between two body parts, usually fingers. In a complete SignWriting sign, it describes how contact happens; it does not name the signed word. Its placement and the surrounding symbols supply the handshape, location, and movement.

Text symbol

What 𝤐 means

It marks brushing contact between two body parts.

In SignWriting, “between” means the contact is between two body parts, usually fingers; “brush” means contact touches and then moves off the surface. This component describes how a sign is made, not which sign-language word it means.

Valerie Sutton first developed DanceWriting in 1966 to record dance and preserve Danish ballet steps. In 1974, researchers in Copenhagen asked her to adapt it to record signed and spoken gestures. Later input from Deaf writers helped develop it into a writing system for sign languages. The SignWriting System 2004 manual (SSS-2004) and the 2008 reference manual for the International SignWriting Alphabet (ISWA) both place Brush Between in the Contact group.

How do I read 𝤐 in a full sign?

Read it with the complete SignWriting sign.

A sign is arranged like a small two-dimensional diagram: handshape, contact, movement, face, and location symbols gain meaning from their positions. 𝤐 alone cannot supply the handshape, location, direction, or signed word. Digital formats can list symbols in a line and store each symbol’s position separately; if the position data are lost, 𝤐 remains, but the sign’s full arrangement does not.

How do I type 𝤐?

Use Unicode input for the glyph; use an editor for complete signs.

In software with Unicode hexadecimal entry, type 1D910 for this character. A full sign also needs each symbol’s position, so use a SignWriting editor or a position-aware linear format.

Technical notation: this marker describes a contact action inside a written SignWriting sign.

A lone 𝤐 does not name a signed word; read it as one part of the full sign.

1

Why does 𝤐 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
