SignWriting Simultaneous Mark

508/672

In SignWriting, 𝧻 says paired movements belong to the same moment. It appears inside a written sign, not as a standalone signed word or chat reaction. Its curved line describes timing, not smooth movement.

What 𝧻 means

It groups movement symbols so they are read together.

The 1981 SignWriting for Everyday Use manual contrasts movement symbols without the Simultaneous Line, read from left to right, with movements marked by it, read as one action happening at once. This lets a written sign show hands, face, or body acting in parallel instead of forcing every motion into a sequence.

The mark coordinates timing. Handshapes, directions, locations, and other symbols give the sign its specific meaning in a sign language.

Does 𝧻 mean smooth movement?

No: it marks timing, not movement quality.

In 1998, a SignWriting list answer clarified that the curved Simultaneous Line marks right-and-left movements happening together; it does not mean smoothness. Smoothness describes how motion flows, while timing describes when movements happen.

Other timing marks make different distinctions. marks simultaneous movement in opposite directions. An uneven-alternating pattern has one hand move while the other stays still, then swaps.

What does it mean when 𝧻 is sent alone?

It is a SignWriting fragment, not a complete signed word.

A complete SignWriting sign depends on several symbols and their two-dimensional placement. A single character can appear without showing that layout; ask for the surrounding sign or sentence to understand the fragment.

Sutton's movement-writing system began with DanceWriting in 1966. In 1974, researchers at the University of Copenhagen asked her to adapt it for sign languages. Unicode encodes individual characters, while a higher-level layout system preserves the positions that make a complete sign.

Technical and instructional: it signals that the writer is encoding sign-language movement.

Do not read it as smoothness; that is a separate movement quality.

Does 𝧻 mean smooth movement?

No. It marks simultaneous timing between movement symbols; smoothness describes how the motion flows.

Why does 𝧻 look wrong in plain text?

The font may lack Sutton SignWriting glyphs. Even when 𝧻 renders, one character does not show a complete sign's two-dimensional layout; use a SignWriting-aware editor or viewer for that arrangement.

Use your system's Unicode input method; the keystrokes vary. A font that includes Sutton SignWriting glyphs is needed to display it.
