What 𝡾 means
It marks one handshape component, not a whole sign. A handshape shows how the fingers and thumb are held. 𝡾 can appear inside a complete sign, whose reading comes from its other symbols and their arrangement.
SignWriting grew out of Valerie Sutton's DanceWriting, a notation for ballet movement that existed by 1966. In 1974, researchers at the University of Copenhagen asked Sutton to adapt it to record gestures and Danish Sign Language from video. Deaf writers and signers later developed it into a writing system for multiple signed languages.
Why isn't 𝡾 a complete sign?
It records one handshape, not a complete sign.
SignWriting signs arrange symbols in two dimensions. Movement, contact, location, orientation, and facial or body cues can join the handshape. Their placement and modifiers can matter too, so read 𝡾 within the complete sign.
Technical: this is a SignWriting component used in written signs and editing tools.
Alone, it has no fixed English translation; read it within the complete sign.
