What ㌑ means
Type ギニー for the ordinary word; a character picker enters ㌑.
Katakana is one of the Japanese syllabaries, and ギニー is written with it. Ordinary Japanese keyboard conversion gives the unboxed spelling, not the square form. In horizontal and vertical Japanese layout, the marks may be arranged differently without changing their reading.
What does ㌑ mean?
It is the boxed Japanese spelling of ギニー, “guinea.”
Japanese typography fit short Katakana spellings into one square cell about as wide as a Japanese character. Older Japanese character standards encoded ㌑ separately from ギニー, so Unicode retains the boxed form as its own character. The guinea began as a British gold coin made for trade with Africa, later became an accounting unit and, as of 2026, is no longer a circulating currency.
Questions people ask
1Why does ㌑ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
