What ㎖ means
It means millilitres; the square is a one-cell layout form. Unicode maps it to m plus ℓ, the litre sign.
A Japanese technical glossary, 工学字彙, records ml in 1886; that dates the abbreviation, not this boxed glyph. Unicode 18.0’s square-symbol set preserves Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese character standards.
As of 2026-09-06, Japanese layout guidance puts full-width units mainly in vertical text; official medicine notation uses mL.
Technical, compact, typographic.
The square changes the cell, not the amount.
