sunuwar letter nah

Sunuwar Letter Nah

Use a Sunuwar keyboard layout to type 𑯍; the Latin n key alone will not produce it. Nah is Sunuwar’s n letter, and the original spelling also used it to mark vowel nasalization. K. B. Jentich developed the modern script in 1942; a later letter, 𑯚, gave the back-of-mouth nasal sound an alternative to the older 𑯍𑯊 spelling.

What 𑯍 means

Install a Sunuwar keyboard layout; the Latin n key alone will not enter 𑯍.

Translation Commons publishes a desktop Sunuwar layout, and Keyman offers phonetic Sunuwar input. Select the layout and use its key mapping.

What does 𑯍 do in Sunuwar writing?

It writes n and, in the original spelling, could mark a nasalized vowel.

K. B. Jentich developed the modern Sunuwar script in 1942 for writing Sunuwar. Nah belongs to its original letter set. In that spelling, the same letter could write the n consonant or mark a vowel pronounced with air passing through the nose.

Sunuwar has no ancestral link to other writing systems, although its overall structure was modeled on Latin. Later users expanded the script: 𑯖 was borrowed from Limbu for long a, and 𑯚 was added for a nasal sound made with the back of the tongue. Older spelling wrote that sound with 𑯍𑯊.

Why does Sunuwar spelling differ by region?

Nepal uses an alphabet; Sikkim uses an abugida.

As of 2026, Sunuwar spelling differs by region: in Nepal’s alphabetic model, a consonant has no built-in vowel. In Sikkim’s abugida, a consonant normally carries an unstated short vowel, which a separate mark can suppress.
