Takri Digit Nine

68/68

𑛉 is Takri’s numeral for nine. Use it for numbers in Takri writing, such as historical records or script study; an ordinary 9 is a different character. Its shape depends on the font: without Takri support it may appear as a box.

What 𑛉 means

This Takri 9 means the number nine. It is a decimal numeral, so in a date, amount, or count it contributes nine to the larger number.

Takri wrote Dogri, Chambeali, and other Pahari languages of the western Himalayas. The surrounding writing helps identify which language or record you are reading.

What is the history of Takri digit nine?

Takri grew from Sharada, an earlier South Asian script. Devāśeṣa, an intermediate form between them, emerged in the 14th century; Takri became distinct in the 16th century. Those dates trace the script’s development, not a separate origin date for 𑛉.

In everyday writing, Takri served commercial and informal needs; regional forms served as official scripts in several princely states from the 17th century until the middle of the 20th century. Records include manuscripts, inscriptions, letters, decrees, business accounts, and postal material.

Takri is related to Gurmukhi, the script used for Punjabi, and to Landa, another South Asian script. Dogra Akkhar is a regional Takri form used for Dogri. As of 2026, script-revival projects also use Takri for teaching and preservation.

How do I type 𑛉?

Enter it through Unicode-aware input or a Takri-capable editor.

The ordinary 9 key produces a different character. Use an editor that accepts Takri or a hexadecimal input method; the exact shortcut varies by operating system.

Takri has regional forms without one universal standard shape, so fonts may draw this character with slightly different outlines. A box means the font lacks a Takri glyph; choose a font with Takri coverage to display it.

Neutral and documentary; outside Takri writing, it signals a historical-script context.

Without Takri font support, the recipient may see an empty box instead of a readable nine.
