tamil om

Tamil Om

ௐ is the Tamil-script sign for Om, also called Aum; Tamil lexicons also use the name Ongaaram. It opens or frames prayers and mantras. In a message, it can signal devotion or solemn assent, so read a standalone send in context.

What ௐ means

It marks Om as a devotional invocation in Tamil script. Tamil lexicons use the name Ongaaram and describe it at the start or end of worship, mantras, and writing; they also record a solemn “yes” reading.

A 1909 account reports an Aum monogram—a single combined design—on coins and masonry from the Anuradhapura period in Sri Lanka, placing related examples in the first–fourth centuries CE. This is early evidence for an ancestor, not proof that this exact sign began there. Unicode evidence connects Tamil Om with Grantha Om, another South Indian script form: the Tamil design encloses the m-like element, while Grantha places a nasal mark to its right.

What does ௐ signal when someone sends it?

Read it as devotional or solemn before reading it as casual. Alone, it can point to prayer, a mantra, or a religious cue; it can also express assent. Check the surrounding words before treating it as agreement.

A 2006 Unicode proposal documents the sign in Hindu religious texts, temple publications, and shop signboards. In a message, it can mark faith, Tamil-script identity, or a ceremonial tone.

Is ௐ different from ஒம் or ஒஂ?

Yes: they are different text sequences. ௐ is a dedicated sign; ஒம் and ஒஂ spell Om with separate Tamil characters.

In some Tamil manuscript practice, ௳, the Pillaiyar suzhi (an auspicious opening mark), is preferred for an invocation. A 2012 Unicode proposal records this use where other scripts use Om.

Devotional and ceremonial, with a distinct Tamil-script identity.

If you mean simple agreement, write “yes”; ௐ carries devotional weight.

Questions people ask

3

Why did typing “om” produce Tamil letters?

Transliteration can map a typed spelling to ordinary Tamil letters instead of the dedicated sign. In the TST editor, `oṁ` yields ௐ, while `oṃ` and `om` yield separate spellings.

Is ௐ the same as the Pillaiyar suzhi?

No. They are different Tamil characters. A 2012 Unicode proposal records ௳ as an auspicious opening mark in some Tamil manuscript practice.

Can ௐ mean “yes”?

Yes. Tamil lexicons also record ஓம் as solemn assent; a standalone use still depends on context.
