Tangut Component-116

116/768

𘡳 is a piece used to describe or look up Tangut characters; by itself, it is not a whole word. The Tangut script was created for the Western Xia state and drew on Chinese writing without deriving directly from it. The number 116 is a Unicode catalog label, not a translation.

What 𘡳 means

It identifies a structural piece inside a larger Tangut character. Scholars use components to describe how a character is built or to find it in a dictionary; this isolated piece is not a complete written word.

The Tangut script, also called the Xixia script, was created around 1036 on the order of Emperor Li Yuanhao as part of building the Western Xia state. Its creation supported a Tangut edition of the Buddhist canon and a state identity distinct from Song China.

Tangut writing took visual and compositional inspiration from Chinese writing, but it did not descend from it. Neighboring Khitan peoples offered a precedent for a separate state script; one Khitan script was based largely on Chinese writing. An undated manuscript from Khara-Khoto is thought to date to the 12th or early 13th century, a later witness to Tangut writing.

Why does 𘡳 look blank or different?

A missing box means the font cannot draw 𘡳. This is a text character, so its visible form comes from the font. A font without Tangut Components coverage may show a box or blank space; a Tangut-capable font supplies its shape.

The Tangut Component-116 Unicode label is sequential, not a traditional Tangut name for the shape. Unicode brings together components from scholarly dictionaries and publications because there is no single standard component set; the list is ordered by stroke count and stroke order.

A scholarly label for studying Tangut character structure.

The number 116 is a catalog label, not a translation.

Why does 𘡳 appear as a square?

A font or app without Tangut Components coverage cannot draw it; the square is a missing-glyph marker, not a different character.
