tangut component-219

Tangut Component 219

219/768

𘣚 is a structural component used to describe larger Tangut characters, not a complete word to translate. Modern Tangut indexes also use components to group entries; if it appears as a box, the selected font usually lacks this glyph.

What 𘣚 means

It is a component, not a complete Tangut word.

The Tangut component system helps describe how larger characters are built. Tangut is the historical language of the Western Xia state, and its script emerged around 1036 for writing that language; it appeared in official, private, and religious texts.

During the Western Xia period, dictionaries did not group entries by radicals, meaning components used as lookup keys. Modern dictionaries developed several competing component indexes. In the 1997 index to Li Fanwen's Tangut dictionary, Tangut radical 219 sits beside entries glossed as return, elegant, marry, reed, win, home, and epidemic. Those are glosses for indexed characters, not translations of 𘣚 itself.

What does it mean if someone sends 𘣚?

It reads as a study specimen or lookup target.

Inside an ideographic description sequence (IDS)—a notation that lays out a character's parts—it marks one component of a larger Tangut character. Beside a complete Tangut character, it signals comparison or annotation, not an added syllable.

If it arrives alone, ask which full character or index the sender means. A component-index gloss such as home or return is not the meaning of 𘣚 by itself.

Technical and specialist: it points to Tangut study or component analysis.

Do not use an index gloss as the translation of 𘣚.

Questions people ask

3

Can I send 𘣚 in a message?

Yes, but it will read as a specialist specimen unless you add the full character or explain the notation.

Why is 𘣚 showing as a box?

Your font may lack this Tangut glyph. Input can succeed even when display fails; choose a font that covers Tangut Components.

Is Tangut part of Chinese?

No. Tangut and Chinese are distinct scripts; Tangut characters can resemble Chinese ideographs, but resemblance does not make them the same writing system.
