tangut component-382

Tangut Component 382

382/768

𘥽 is a Tangut component used to describe a written character’s structure, not a word with its own translation. Some Tangut components serve as dictionary radicals and appear in IDS (Ideographic Description Sequence) notation, which shows how a character is built. This number is a Unicode label, not a universal traditional name.

Text symbol

What 𘥽 means

It identifies a structural piece, not a word to translate. 𘥽 belongs to the component inventory used to analyze complete Tangut characters. By itself, it does not give the pronunciation or translation of a whole character; read the complete Tangut character or the structure notation around it.

Tangut components are tools for studying a historic script

The Tangut script was created around 1036 for the Tangut language of the Western Xia state. It appeared in official, private, and religious writing. After Western Xia fell, writing continued under the Yuan and Ming dynasties and became obsolete by the end of the Ming. The Tóngyīn, a Tangut rhyme book organized by sound patterns, was printed in 1125.

Tangut components help scholars analyze characters and index them in dictionaries; some serve as dictionary radicals. Ideographic Description Sequences (IDS) show a character’s component parts and their positions. Unicode’s component set brings together several dictionary and scholarly systems because no single inventory was standard. Component-382 is an encoding label, not a traditional name shared by every Tangut reference work.

Tangut writing drew on Chinese writing traditions but is a distinct script for a different language. This component’s place in Tangut writing does not make it a Chinese radical.

Specialist: useful in Tangut script analysis, dictionary indexing, IDS descriptions, and font testing.
