tangut component-455

Tangut Component 455

455/768

𘧆 is a Tangut component used to describe and index complete Tangut characters, not a word with its own translation. By itself, it reads as a script sample or specialist reference rather than ordinary text. Tangut writing is also called Xixia script; a box where this symbol should appear means the font lacks a glyph.

What 𘧆 means

It is a structural component, not a word to translate.

The Tangut component inventory gives dictionaries and scholars a way to identify, describe, and index complete Tangut characters. This component has no standalone translation; the reading belongs to a complete character.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It supported Western Xia's state identity and a Tangut literary tradition.

Around 1036, ruler Li Yuanhao established the script for the Tangut-led Western Xia state. It supported a distinct written tradition and a Buddhist canon alongside Song China.

Tangut writing continued after Western Xia fell. Later texts include Buddhist scriptures, Chinese classics translated into Tangut, encyclopedias, military works, literature, inscriptions, and manuscripts.

Why does Tangut writing resemble Chinese?

Tangut uses Chinese-style, component-built character forms.

The script is distinct from Chinese, despite that resemblance. Scholars also compare its structure with neighboring Khitan writing traditions; that comparison does not make 𘧆 a Khitan sign or a Chinese radical.

Technical and specialist; on its own, it reads like a script sample or a component-list entry.

Do not translate the component by itself; a complete Tangut character carries the reading.

1

Why does 𘧆 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
