Tangut Component 467

467/768

𘧒 is a Tangut component used to describe and index larger Tangut characters; by itself, it does not translate as a word. Component systems help scholars sort and analyze Tangut writing, created for the Western Xia state.

What 𘧒 means

It is a Tangut component used to describe and index larger characters. Tangut characters are built from parts; component sets let scholars name, sort, and analyze them. Tangut components can also appear in an Ideographic Description Sequence, a string that shows how a larger character is arranged. A component identifies a part, not a word or pronunciation.

There is no single historical component list. Scholars and dictionaries used different inventories, and Unicode brought together components documented in Tangut dictionaries and other publications. The number 467 is a catalog label, not an old Tangut word or the sign's original name.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It was created to write Tangut and serve the Western Xia state. The state ordered a new script project, and the script was promulgated in 1036, before the dynasty was formally established. Its designers adapted a Chinese-style writing model to represent the Tangut language and state.

Manuscripts found at Khara-Khoto, a site with many surviving Tangut texts, include Buddhist scriptures, Chinese classics, and a bilingual glossary. Together, they show religious, literary, and language-teaching uses; Tangut writing also served state purposes.

Tangut writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227, especially in Buddhist material. Tangut dhāraṇī pillars—stone monuments inscribed with Buddhist ritual texts—dated 1502 are the latest datable Tangut material. At the script level, Tangut shares structural traditions with Chinese-style writing and Khitan and Jurchen scripts; this does not make 𘧒 interchangeable with a sign from any of them.

How do I type 𘧒?

Use an input method that accepts this code point.

On Linux GNOME/GTK, press CtrlShiftU, type 189D2, then Space or Enter. In Microsoft Word or Outlook, type 189D2 and press AltX. On macOS, as of 2026, Unicode Hex Input accepts only four hexadecimal digits; use Character Viewer for this symbol. If 𘧒 appears as a box, the selected font lacks a drawing for it; the text character is still the same.

Specialist and archival: it belongs in Tangut studies and Unicode tools, not ordinary chat.

If it arrives alone, treat it as a technical reference; it has no standalone translation.

Why does 𘧒 show as a box?

A font-coverage problem. The text can contain 𘧒 even when the selected font has no drawing for that component; switch to a font that supports Tangut Components.
