Tangut Component 522

522/768

𘨉 is a Tangut component used to index and analyze complete Tangut characters, not a word with its own translation. You’ll mainly meet it in dictionaries, character-analysis resources, and specialist input methods. Its backstory is a medieval state project: the Tangut script supported Buddhist writing and a Western Xia identity distinct from Song China.

What 𘨉 means

It is a structural component, not a word with its own translation. Tangut characters are built from components; modern dictionaries use these pieces and stroke order to index entries, while scholars use them to describe and analyze complete characters.

The history of Tangut component 522 starts with the Tangut script. It was created in 1036 under the order of Li Yuanhao, first emperor of Western Xia, a medieval Tangut state in what is now northwestern China. Tangut writing drew visual and structural ideas from Chinese writing without deriving from it. Its neighbors, the Khitan, had created two scripts about a century earlier.

A likely purpose was to produce a Tangut Buddhist canon, alongside a state identity distinct from Song China. The script was also used for Tangut translations of Chinese works. After Western Xia fell to the Mongols in 1227, Tangut writing continued under the Yuan and into the Ming. Manuscripts recovered at Khara-khoto probably include examples from the 12th or early 13th century; Tangut writing was obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.

How do I type or display 𘨉?

Use component or stroke lookup. The Xunpin Tangut input method supports both; phonetic lookup targets complete Tangut characters.

If 𘨉 appears blank or as a box, the likely problem is font coverage. The text is still intact even if the font cannot draw it; use a font or app that supports Tangut.

Scholarly and technical: it belongs in dictionaries, character analysis, and Tangut input tools.

Do not translate 𘨉 as a complete Tangut word; it is a component used to analyze characters.
