Tangut character 𗃢

227/6136

𗃢 is a Tangut character glossed “doubt.” It belonged to the Western Xia writing tradition, whose script served government and Buddhist translation. If someone sends it without a gloss, its historical meaning does not tell you what they feel—and a missing Tangut font may hide it as a box.

What 𗃢 means

In Tangut, 𗃢 is glossed “doubt.” Its standalone dictionary sense is uncertainty or questioning.

The Tangut script was commissioned by the Western Xia state in 1036–37 for state-building, a distinct identity from Song China, and Buddhist translation. It served official documents, law codes, Buddhist and Chinese works, and literature. After Western Xia fell, the script continued to appear; a 1502 inscription on a Tangut dhāraṇī pillar is cited as its last known example.

This character is recorded in the 12th-century Wénhǎi (“Sea of Writing”) and Tóngyīn (“Homophones”), two Tangut reference works. In one proposed compound, 𗃢𘔢, it pairs with a character glossed “far, distant”; scholars tentatively read the pair as “forethought.” That proposed compound reading does not change the standalone gloss.

𗃢 sent to me: what should I make of it?

A lone 𗃢 is not a reliable clue to someone’s mood. A reader familiar with Tangut may recognize “doubt”; someone unfamiliar with the script may see only an unfamiliar sign, and an unsupported font may show no glyph at all. Ask for context or a gloss before assigning it an emotional tone.

The proposed “forethought” reading belongs to 𗃢𘔢, a historical compound pairing “doubt” with “far, distant.” It is not a reason to translate 𗃢 alone as “forethought.”

Specialist and historical: fits Tangut language, Western Xia history, Buddhist texts, or calligraphy contexts.

A lone glyph may look like a personal expression of doubt; its historical gloss does not reveal the sender's intent.

Questions people ask

3

Why does 𗃢 show as a box?

A font or app without Tangut support is showing a missing-glyph box. The character still needs Tangut-capable display support.

Can 𗃢 mean “forethought”?

Only as a tentative reading of 𗃢𘔢. The pair combines “doubt” with “far, distant”; the standalone character is glossed “doubt.”

Should I send 𗃢 by itself?

Only if the recipient reads Tangut or you provide a gloss. Even when the font works, someone unfamiliar with Tangut may not identify it.
