Tangut Character 1716F

368/6136

𗅯 is a Tangut character with a scholarly reconstructed reading, written *kjɨ¹, but no settled English gloss. That notation estimates its sound; it is not a translation of its word. It belongs in Tangut research, and a blank square means the active font lacks Tangut coverage.

What 𗅯 means

Its English gloss is not settled. The Tangut pronunciation for 𗅯 is written *kjɨ¹ in a scholarly reconstruction: an estimate of its sound, not a translation or an ordinary spelling to pronounce by English rules.

The lexicographic record reaches the 12th century: 𗅯 appears in the Tangut reference work Sea of Writing and in a homophones dictionary, which groups entries by sound.

The components are not picture clues. Tangut components help describe a character's structure, but the same component can contribute different sounds or meanings in different characters; the arrangement alone does not translate 𗅯.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It gave the Tangut language a writing system for state life. Schools taught it, officials used it for records, and translators used it for Buddhist and Chinese works. It was designed for Tangut, not as a set of freestanding picture symbols.

Its design principles drew on Chinese writing, but Tangut is a separate script for a different language. Tangut writing continued after the Western Xia state fell; a Tangut inscription is dated 1502.

Why does 𗅯 appear as a square?

The active font lacks Tangut coverage. 𗅯 is a text character drawn by a font, so its shape can vary between typefaces.

If it appears as an empty square, choose or install a font with Tangut support. The character is still the same; the font determines whether its glyph appears.

A character for Tangut research and transcription; in ordinary messages, it makes sense when Tangut context is clear.

A square means the font cannot draw Tangut.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗅯 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
