Tangut Ideograph-1765A

𗙚 is the Tangut character glossed as “the back of somebody or something.” Tangut was the writing system of the historical Western Xia state; the dictionary meaning is a word, not a ready-made message reaction. If it shows as a box, your font lacks Tangut coverage.

Text symbol

What 𗙚 means

It names the back of a person or thing.

Li Fanwen's Tangut dictionary gives the reconstructed reading wjij and glosses its entry as “the back of somebody or something.” That is a dictionary meaning; a message's surrounding words show what the character refers to.

The Tangut script was established for the Tangut language under the Western Xia state. In 1036, ruler Li Yuanhao had a formal writing system created. It served government writing, Buddhist texts, and translated Chinese books, while giving the state a distinct written identity.

Why does 𗙚 look like Chinese writing?

Tangut is a separate script inspired by Chinese writing.

Tangut was visually and structurally inspired by Chinese, but it was not derived from it. The Khitan neighbors had created their own scripts a century earlier, a regional parallel in state script-making—not evidence that 𗙚 is Khitan.

Unicode's Tangut chart files 𗙚 under radical 𘡢, a graphic label used to group characters for lookup. A Tangut-capable font is needed to display the glyph; different fonts may draw it differently.

Historical and scholarly; unusual as an unexplained word in an everyday message.

The gloss says “back”; the message must show what it refers to.

Questions people ask

2

How is 𗙚 pronounced?

There is no single agreed reconstruction. Li Fanwen's dictionary index gives wjij. A 2018 study of the Tangut text Homonyms records it in a group transcribed phin₄; the text may reflect another dialect or a later stage. These are scholarly reconstructions, not everyday pronunciation spellings.

Why is 𗙚 a blank box?

Your font lacks Tangut coverage. Use one that supports Tangut; the character can be encoded correctly even when your font cannot draw it.
