What 𗥾 means

It means “skill” or ability in Tangut.

The Tangut character for skill appears as entry 2779 in Li Fanwen’s Tangut–Chinese dictionary, which supplies this lexical gloss.

A dictionary gloss is a starting point; the surrounding Tangut text helps establish the word’s exact role and shade of meaning.

Is 𗥾 a Chinese character?

No. It belongs to Tangut writing, whose design drew on Chinese writing.

Created around 1036 during the founding of the Western Xia state, Tangut writing served state-building. Its development is linked to compiling a Buddhist canon—a collection of Buddhist scriptures—in Tangut and to marking an identity distinct from Song China. The neighboring Khitan state had already made its own script, an earlier regional precedent.

Tangut texts included Buddhist sutras, official writing, and translations of Chinese works. The script took inspiration from Chinese forms but was not derived from Chinese characters.

When was Tangut script used?

It served the Western Xia state and outlasted it.

A manuscript from the Khara-khoto site in a British Library collection is undated, but probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. After the Mongol conquest ended Western Xia rule, Tangut writing continued in Yuan and Ming texts before becoming obsolete by the end of Ming rule.

In historical and linguistic study, surviving Tangut texts provide the context for reading this character. On its own, 𗥾 gives a dictionary gloss but not the surrounding meaning.

Historical and specialist; in an everyday message it probably points to Tangut or its history.

Without Tangut context, recipients cannot read “skill” from the shape alone.
