What 𗳛 means

𗳛 is a character in Tangut, the writing system used by Western Xia. The script was created around 1036 under the state's first emperor, Li Yuanhao. It gave the state a distinct written identity alongside Song China; one purpose was a Tangut Buddhist canon, a collection of Buddhist scriptures in the script.

A structural analysis breaks 𗳛 into two Tangut components arranged left to right: 𘣀 and 𘡧. Components are structural parts used to analyze how a character is built, not translations. The Tangut dictionary Sea of Writing organizes entries by rhyme and lists 𗳛 at 23.132 under its 17th rhyme group.

Tangut writing appears in state and private records, Buddhist texts, inscriptions, translations, and manuscripts. A Tangut manuscript associated with Khara-Khoto probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. The script followed the earlier Khitan practice of creating a state script and drew on Chinese visual and compositional traditions while remaining separate from Chinese. It remained in use through the Yuan and Ming periods before falling out of use.

What does 𗳛 mean in a message?

Read it as Tangut writing, not as an emoji reaction. The Unicode label is an index name, not a translation of its Tangut word. If the exact word matters, use the surrounding Tangut text or a Tangut dictionary.

Historical and specialist; its role comes from the Tangut text around it.

Do not substitute a Chinese character: Tangut is a separate script.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗳛 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
