What 𗳪 means
It begins a Tangut term for an irrigation canal. A Khara-Khoto land-sale contract places 𗳪 before 𘕺 in a two-character term translated “Canal for Irrigation.” Scholars transcribe a reconstructed reading for 𗳪 as zer²; the canal meaning belongs to the whole term, not to 𗳪 alone.
Why was Tangut writing created?
It gave the Tangut language a writing system of its own. Tangut script was created around 1036 under the first emperor of Western Xia. It was used for government, private documents, and religious works. After Western Xia fell, its use continued through the Yuan and Ming dynasties before Tangut became obsolete.
Why can 𗳪 look like a box?
Your font may not include Tangut characters. With font fallback, a browser or app without a Tangut-capable font may show a missing-glyph box. Changing fonts changes the drawing, not the encoded character.
Historical Tangut writing, with a documented administrative use.
Alone, 𗳪 does not mean “canal”; that reading belongs to a documented two-character term.

1Questions people ask
2Is 𗳪 a Chinese character?
No. It belongs to Tangut script, a distinct writing system shaped in a Chinese-writing environment and using brush-stroke conventions familiar from Chinese writing.
Why does 𗳪 show as a box?
The font may lack Tangut coverage. Use a Tangut-capable font in your browser or app; the box signals missing display support, not a different character.
