What 𘘙 means
In Tangut, 𘘙 means “to enclose.” It is a written sign for a word. The 12th century rhyme dictionary Sea of Writing records it at Level Tone 8.161; a rhyme dictionary groups characters by sound. This is the earliest clear dictionary reference for the character.
Why was Tangut writing created?
It served government, religion, and literature. Around 1036, the Western Xia court established Tangut writing to support a Buddhist canon—a collection of Buddhist scriptures—and a distinct political identity. It was used for official documents, Buddhist translations, and translated or adapted Chinese moral, Confucian, military, and literary works.
After the Western Xia kingdom fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued for centuries; the last known example is dated 1502. Its role shifted from a working written language to a subject of specialist study.
What connects these Tangut characters?
These are specific derivational or meaning links, not interchangeable signs. Tangut character analysis can explain one sign through another or group signs in a chain of related meanings. The entries below include both kinds of connection. A component does not automatically carry one fixed meaning throughout the script.
Historical and specialist: readers outside a Tangut text or study setting need a gloss or surrounding passage.
