What ⸣ means
It closes the upper pair around a damaged or partly legible passage.
For cuneiform, ⸢sign⸣ can mark a half-broken sign; editions of Aramaic and Phoenician inscriptions also use the pair around damaged letters. The marks separate surviving traces from letters an editor supplies.
The damaged-text bracket convention appears in 19th-century epigraphic practice and was discussed at a 1931 Leiden meeting.
