upper half heavy white square

Upper Half Heavy White Square

𜸃 is the upper-half square graphic from Ohio Scientific’s old character set. It let a text-mode computer build pictures from fixed screen tiles, including plotted displays and games. Unicode’s proposal cross-references ⎴, the top square bracket, as a visual comparison; they are separate characters.

What 𜸃 means

It was a fixed graphic tile on Ohio Scientific screens. The proposal’s source table maps it to code 05 in the Ohio Scientific character set.

Ohio Scientific’s March–April 1978 company journal described the Model 540 character generator—the computer’s built-in library of fixed screen shapes—as a set of graphics, plotting, and game pieces. A program could place those characters in text-screen cells to draw a scene. In 2022, the Unicode proposal included 731 legacy-computing graphics characters to preserve data exchange and support emulators and text-mode displays.

Questions people ask

1

Why does this character appear as an empty box?

If it appears that way, the selected font lacks a drawing for this character. The text still holds the character value; a font with a matching glyph changes how it displays.
