What 🭗 means
It fills the upper-left corner above a sloping edge. The diagonal runs from the upper part of the character cell’s left edge to the centre of its top edge. The cell is the rectangular space reserved for one character; the triangle occupies only part of it.
This piece belongs to Teletext’s G3 graphics set. Teletext, developed in Britain in the early 1970s, delivered text and simple pictures through television broadcasts. Its “smooth mosaic” pieces use diagonal edges to make outlines less blocky when characters are arranged in a grid.
Unicode preserves these pieces so older graphics can remain text, including in emulators and text-mode drawings. The filled triangle follows the text colour: it need not be black.

Questions people ask
1Why do I see a box instead of 🭗?
Your font or app may not support this character. Use a font that includes Symbols for Legacy Computing; a missing-character box is not the triangle’s intended shape.

🭗\1FB57Why is 🭗 a box on my screen?
fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
Codes and encoding1 code points
