What ꗘ means
It writes a Vai syllable transcribed in Latin letters as “jo.” Vai uses a syllabary, a script whose characters represent syllables; this one contributes a syllable to a word, not a full word by itself. Its meaning comes from the surrounding word or sentence.
A comparison of dated Vai manuscripts was published in 2018, and its earliest sample is from 1834. Historical accounts place the script’s creation around 1832–1833 by several Vai speakers, often naming Duwalu Bukele, rather than a single inventor. An 1849 account describes young Vai men writing letters to one another and testing whether friends could read them.
In 1849, a missionary account presented Vai writing as evidence of African intellectual and religious capacity. Vai writers used the script for correspondence, autobiographies, moral sayings, and Islamic material. The story that the script began in one person’s dream is a later account, not settled history. A 2002 study treats Cherokee as a debated comparison; visual resemblance alone does not establish borrowing.
Someone sent me ꗘ—what should I assume?
Treat a lone send as a sample or fragment, then ask what text it belongs to. A Vai reader can recognize a syllable, but the glyph alone does not tell you the complete word or passage. Without knowing Vai, you cannot translate it from this character by itself.
A box or question mark can appear when the display lacks a Vai font; the text may still contain ꗘ. SIL’s older Vai font package used a legacy 8-bit encoding rather than Unicode, as documented on 2026-09-13.
Neutral in Vai writing; alone in an unrelated chat, it looks like a script sample to readers who cannot read Vai.
Do not assign it an emoji mood: a single syllable has no reaction meaning on its own.

Questions people ask
2Why does ꗘ show as a box or question mark?
A missing Vai glyph. The font or system may not support Vai characters; a Unicode-capable Vai font can display it.
Was ꗘ borrowed from Cherokee?
Not established. A 2002 historical study treats the proposed connection as debated; visual resemblance alone does not prove that one writing system came from another.
