What ꘀ means
It marks a syllable in written Vai.
“Je” is its Latin-letter transcription. Short syllables use one sign; long vowels, a vowel glide (a shift between vowels), or a nasal ending may take two.
why was the Vai script created?
Vai people developed it to write their language.
Missionary records describe it as new in 1834; historical reconstruction dates its development to around 1832–1833. Origin accounts differ on a dream, a challenge, or outside contact.
It served schools, letters, records and trade. Arabic and Latin were neighboring literacy traditions; a direct Cherokee link is conjectural. A 1962 conference standardized it. Unicode 16.0 describes informal merchant use for correspondence and records alongside English and Arabic.
