What ꖌ means
In a Vai transliteration layout, type j, then o.
That j o sequence produces ꖌ in this layout; it is not a shortcut shared by every keyboard.
What does ꖌ mean in Vai?
It writes a short Vai syllable.
Its sound is roughly the “j” in “jam” followed by a clear “o.” ꖌ is one sign for that syllable, not a whole word by itself.
Vai normally writes words without spaces, so neighboring syllables complete the word and show its boundaries.
How did the Vai script develop?
Vai speakers began developing it around 1832 or 1833.
The earliest identified surviving manuscript is dated 1834. Bukele is central to the history, while an early manuscript account also names other men involved. Writing gave Vai speakers a way to record messages in their own language. Historical accounts connect this work with Arabic writing used by neighboring Mandingo communities and with written communication through trade. By the mid-19th century, Vai writing also carried Muslim texts.
A standard syllabary was published in 1962. Vai’s syllabic design later influenced Mende, Loma, and Kpelle scripts; a Bassa alphabet’s designer knew Vai, and influence on Bamum is possible. Whether Cherokee, Arabic, or Latin-letter models shaped its origins remains debated.
Neutral inside Vai text; alone, it gives a syllable without enough context to identify a word.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꖌ show as a square?
Your font or text app lacks Vai support. A Vai-capable font can display the character; the fallback square is a missing-glyph marker, not another Vai sign.
