What ꗷ means
It represents the Vai syllable transliterated “le.”
Vai writing emerged in the early 1830s. Missionary accounts and the Book of Ndole, a Vai-language text composed before 1849, document its teaching and use. It supported Vai literacy alongside Arabic and Latin traditions, and appeared in letters, trade, and community records. Standardization dropped most logograms, signs for whole words. Mende Kikakui drew on Vai’s syllabic structure; a Cherokee connection remains conjectural.
Why does ꗷ show as a box?
The active font lacks a glyph for this Vai character.
The text can still contain ꗷ; a font with Vai coverage is needed to display it.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꗷ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Vai block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
