What 󠅱 means
A defined pair can request a particular drawn form.
An ideographic variation sequence puts the selector immediately after the Han character whose form it chooses. This can preserve a form in plain text, such as one needed in a name or historical text.
The same selector can point to different forms after different Han characters. Unicode ignores an unregistered pair, so adding this selector at random will not change the character before it.
Why put a glyph choice in plain text?
An early design draft, “Plane 14 Variant Tag,” is dated 1997-12-01. Adobe-Japan1, the first IVD collection for Japanese type forms, was registered on 2007-12-14. Later collections reflect distinct publishing, government, and scholarly needs.
