variation selector-33

Variation Selector-33

17/240

VS33 is an invisible selector that requests a registered glyph form after a specific Han character; by itself it has no visible meaning. In Japanese text, a whole pair can preserve the exact form needed for a name or record. If the pair is unregistered or unsupported, the base character usually looks unchanged.

Text symbol

What 󠄐 means

It requests a registered glyph form after one specific Han character.

VS33 works only as the second character in an ideographic variation sequence (IVS): a Han character followed immediately by the selector. The number 33 does not mean “variant 33”; the character and selector together must match a registered entry in the Unicode Ideographic Variation Database (IVD). The matching entry and collection identify the requested form.

Japanese personal and place names, public records, publishing, and historical texts can require a precise written form. The proposal trail for ideographic variation selectors starts in 1997; the Unicode Technical Committee approved the supplementary range in 2001, and it entered Unicode in 2003. Those dates mark the encoding system, not the age of the forms it preserves.

Why does VS33 disappear?

Unsupported pairs leave no visible selector.

Variation selectors are default-ignorable: if a pair is unregistered, the font lacks its requested variant, or the software does not support IVS, the base character appears without an added mark. A supporting font can show the requested form; otherwise, you may see the default form.

Keep the pair intact in a name or record. Removing VS33 from a registered pair may leave the same character identity but lose the glyph form the document meant to preserve.

Technical and invisible: use it for exact Han-character glyph data, especially names and records, not decoration.

A blank selector is not broken text; check the full pair before removing it.

Questions people ask

1

Can I delete VS33?

Only when you know it is stray. Removing an unsupported pair may change nothing visible; removing a registered sequence can discard the exact form a name or record needs.
