variation selector-31

Variation Selector-31

Variation Selector-31 is an invisible code point used after a CJK ideograph—a Chinese, Japanese, or Korean character—to request a registered glyph variant. It does not mean “31” and has no meaning by itself; the complete pair carries the instruction. If software lacks support, the selector normally disappears and the base character stays visible.

What 󠄎 means

It selects a registered glyph variant after a CJK character.

Here, “glyph” means the drawn shape, not a new character or meaning. VS31 belongs to the supplementary ideographic-selector range. Its effect depends on the preceding base character and a registered entry in Unicode’s Ideographic Variation Database; it is not a universal “thirty-first style.”

VS31 has no historical sign tradition of its own. The problem it solves comes from regional, historical, scholarly, government, and publishing traditions that need different shapes for related Han characters. Unicode’s 2003 design discussions made it possible to carry those distinctions in plain text without encoding every glyph as a new character. The selector was encoded in Unicode 4.0 in 2003.

why is U+E010E invisible?

Because the selector has no visible shape of its own.

Fonts that support a registered pair can store its glyph mapping in OpenType Format 14 variation data. If the pair is valid but unsupported, normal rendering shows the base as if the selector were absent. A selector placed alone is a misplaced selector, not a standalone instruction; a diagnostic “show hidden” mode may expose it.

One registered example pairs U+9089 邉 with VS31 in the Adobe-Japan1 collection. That pair identifies a particular Japanese glyph record; VS31 does not carry the same choice into other ideographs. The useful unit is the whole sequence, not the invisible selector by itself.

Technical text component, not a conversational symbol; use it only to select a registered CJK glyph variant.

A lone selector is not a complete sequence; it may look like nothing or appear only in a diagnostic view.

What it means when someone sends it to you

4 readings
After a registered CJK base
Requests the glyph subset registered for that exact base-plus-selector sequence.
Alone in a message
No assigned variation meaning; it is a misplaced selector, not a standalone symbol.
After an ordinary letter or emoji
No sanctioned VS31 interpretation; it does not switch an emoji into another presentation.
In an app without IVS support
The base normally remains; unsupported software hides the selector in normal rendering.

Questions people ask

3

Can I use Variation Selector-31 by itself?

No. It must immediately follow a suitable base character, and the complete pair must be assigned before it can request a defined glyph.

Why does U+E010E do nothing?

Usually, because the pair is unsupported or unassigned. Normal rendering shows the base as if the selector were absent and does not display the selector.

Is Variation Selector-31 an emoji?

No. It is an ideographic variation selector; emoji presentation uses different variation selectors.
