What does the voided Greek cross mean?
It is an equal-armed cross drawn as an outline.
In heraldry—the system for describing coats of arms—“voided” means the centre is cut away, leaving only the outline. An English roll of arms from Henry III’s reign (1216–1272)—an illustrated list of coats of arms—records a cross called “faulx crois,” a period term for a voided cross.
A Unicode proposal from 2018 included this character in a set meant to preserve text graphics from early home computers and teletext, a text service broadcast with television. It describes the home computers as dating circa 1975–1985. In heraldry the word describes an armorial design; in terminal graphics, the character is a screen graphic.
Why does the voided Greek cross show as a box?
Your app may lack a font glyph for this character.
When a font lacks a glyph, software can show a white box, a box with a question mark, or blank space instead. The text can still contain the intended character; a font with a matching glyph may display its cross shape.
