What ꏍ means
It writes the Liangshan Yi syllable romanized as “rot.” The name is not an English word: in the standard Liangshan romanization, its final “t” marks a high tone. Read ꏍ as one syllable; the surrounding Yi writing supplies the word's meaning.
The script's older beginnings are debated, but the oldest reliably dated surviving examples come from the 15th century. In traditional Yi manuscript culture, bimo (ritual specialists and priests) maintained local forms for scripture, legend, medicine, astrology, and ritual knowledge.
Why was the modern Yi script made?
It gave Liangshan Yi a consistent syllabary for wider literacy. The standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It selected and regularized traditional forms into a phonetic syllabary for the Liangshan dialect.
“Cuan script” is a historical label associated with proposed antecedents and local Yi traditions; it is not another name for this Liangshan standard or for ꏍ.
Neutral in Liangshan Yi writing; without surrounding Yi text, readers unfamiliar with the script may not know its word.
“Rot” names the syllable in a romanization; it is not the English word “rot.”

Questions people ask
2Is ꏍ a Chinese character?
No. ꏍ belongs to the standardized Yi syllabary for Liangshan Yi; its square shape does not make it a Han character used to write Chinese.
Why does ꏍ show as a box?
The active font may lack a glyph for Yi script, so the system shows a missing-character box. A font with Yi coverage can display it.
