yi syllable rop

Yi Syllable Rop

977/1165

ꏐ is one syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi; “rop” is the Latin-letter guide to its reading, not an English translation. It contributes to a word or phrase, so the surrounding Nuosu text supplies its meaning. The standardized script grew from older, locally varied Yi writing traditions.

Text symbol

What ꏐ means

It writes one Liangshan Yi syllable. “Rop” is a Latin-letter guide to how to read it, not an English gloss. You cannot reliably translate an isolated syllable; read it as part of the Yi word or sentence.

This standardized syllabary represents Liangshan Nuosu, a variety of Yi associated with the Liangshan region. Yi communities have distinct writing traditions, so this exact form should not be assumed to serve every Yi language.

The writing tradition predates its modern standard

A traditional account credits Aki with creating the Yi script, but the earliest securely dated monumental example is a bronze-bell inscription from 1485. Claims for older bronze, stone, pottery, and bone objects remain debated. Yi texts on paper or parchment in the historical record date to around 1500.

Before standardization, Yi writing varied among communities, including in glyph forms and writing direction. Village priests kept religious, ritual, medical, and family-history texts. A bimo is a Yi ritual specialist who reads or chants these texts. A 2015 study reports that Nuosu ritual manuscripts were still used in ceremonies.

A Latin-letter literacy scheme for Liangshan Yi was introduced in 1956. A standardized traditional Yi syllabary was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980, providing a shared written form for Liangshan. Chinese records used Cuan and Wei as labels for parts of the Yi writing tradition; older Yi forms are not considered to derive directly from Han Chinese characters.

Worth knowing

  • In standard Liangshan Yi Latin spelling, the final p in “rop” marks a low-falling tone: the pitch drops as the syllable is spoken.
