Alt codes
What are Alt symbol codes?
Alt symbol codes - are numeric codes you need to type on Num (number) Pad of your keyboard while holding Alt key in order to input text symbols. You can input letters and characters present on your keyboard as well.
On Laptops
To input keyboard alt symbols from your laptop, enable Num Lock with FN+ScrLck (on some laps at least) and hold Alt key. While holding type corresponding code on num pad keys. Your num pad keys, most likely, are alternative characters on some keys. If you can't find your number pad, you should better follow instructions on my laptop alt codes page.
Compared to facebook symbols
Small advantage of inputting alt symbol codes over usage of facebook symbol codes (fsymbols) is that here really are some frequently used alt symbols available, like the heart symbol, or music note symbols (witch are damn frequently used on people's facebook/myspace profiles) and there are not only the "cool" ones, but useful ones. Like german umlaut symbols, or euro symbol and that you can remember alt codes and use them really easily every day (but you probably won't.. there's no need - just bookmark this reference), so that you'll be able to input those symbols right from your keyboard. But as I said you probably won't so anyway if you'll find some page with symbols you like (maybe this), I really recommend you to bookmark it to stop searching for alt codes times and times again.
How to write alt symbols with keyboard?
Videos
Steps
If you're using laptop - please, read about laptop alt symbols.
-
Find the code.
Find the numeric code that stands for the symbol you want to write. You can see all possible codes listed in the section below.
-
Enable Num Lock.
On usual keyboards Num Lock is a button located on the right side (on Num Pad). When you'll enable it, the green Num Lock indicator will shine on.
- Press Alt button.
-
Type that code on Num Pad.
Hold Alt key pressed and (while holding) enter the numeric code for the symbol that you want to input. The code needs to be entered on the Numeric Pad - right key pad on usual keyboards.
-
Release Alt key.
If you did everything right then the symbol should have been inserted after you've released the Alt key. If it didn't work when you typed the code while holding right Alt key - try holding the left one.
If something's still wrong - re-read the guide or take a look at my full article on how to do symbols by Alt codes.

Details on alt codes
-
#01 - 0127 symbols
For first part of alt keyboard symbols rules are simple. If you'll try to input characters using alt codes 1 - 127 you'll get same ones as if you've tried to type with alt codes 01 - 0127. Not typing leading zero does not cause trouble here.
-
#128 - 255 symbols
Alt symbols with these codes are language-specific. When I try to write a symbol using Num code 158 on my russian-language Windows I get "Ю". Same time, some people get "₧". Omitted leading zero is the reason of this problem. Type "0number" instead of just "number". Like use 0158 instead of just 158. You won't be troubled then.
-
Symbol codes > 256, or 0256
If you'll try to type alt symbols by codes N > 256, or N > 0256 you'll get the same as the one with alt code N modulo 256. For example character with alt code 0444=0256+0188 is "¼". This is equal to the one with code 0188 "¼".
-
Notice: alt codes work only under Windows OS!
You can stop trying to input text symbols using alt codes if you are running Linux, Unix, etc. Be sure, there's nothing like Linux alt codes and I recommend you to just bookmark this page and copy-paste ones you like from here, or come see facebook symbols. But, well, still Mac does have some symbol codes. "Google that" if you are a Mac user.
