alien monster closed jaws

Closed-Jaw Alien Monster

𜱍 is the closed-jaw state of an alien game sprite from the Sharp MZ computer’s European alternate display set. Unicode carries the screen character into conversion and emulator work. Its name is a later description, since legacy computer makers often showed charts or screen images without naming each graphic. If it turns up in a message, read the picture first and let nearby words supply any joke.

What 𜱍 means

It shows the monster with its jaws shut.

It comes from the Sharp MZ computer’s European alternate display set, a second built-in character table for screen graphics. The MZ-700’s second table was for display, not keyboard entry: BASIC programs could show its characters with POKE, a command that writes a value directly into memory. This one occupied table slot 2D.

Why does the sprite have such a specific name?

The name describes the picture; it is not a known original title.

Legacy computer makers often supplied a code chart or screen image without written names for each design. Unicode proposal writers added descriptive labels like this one and mapped the old character for conversion software, emulators, and text-mode programs that use simple characters to draw pictures.

Questions people ask

1

Why does it show as a box?

A box means the active app or font has no usable glyph for this character. The text can still contain the intended symbol; display requires software and a font that can draw it.
