Arrowheads outlived shafts and feathers
An early printed arrow ancestor appears in a 1737 French engineering book, showing water flow and a water-driven wheel’s rotation. Maps also used arrows for river direction. By the mid-to-late 19th century, the shaft and feathers were dropping away, leaving the triangular head to signal direction. In 1922, German mathematician David Hilbert used an arrow in logic to show that one statement follows from another.
