What means
In GNOME/GTK, press CtrlShiftU, type 1CD58, then Enter.
In Microsoft Word, type 1CD58 and press AltX. Both methods enter the character through its hexadecimal Unicode value.
What did block octants do?
They let text cells form low-resolution pictures.
In the early 1980s, Kaypro computers running CP/M, an early disk-based operating system, treated each character cell as a 2 4 grid of on/off pixels, letting programs draw pictures with text. Several octant cells can combine into a single image, with each character contributing one tile. A Unicode proposal from 2021 aimed to preserve legacy character data for conversion and emulator support. As of 2026, the Go terminal tool Octant also uses octants to draw images in text cells.

Questions people ask
1Why does this glyph appear as a box?
A missing-character box usually means the active font lacks the glyph. Some terminal setups still lacked octant coverage as of 2026-09-28; use a font that includes Unicode 16.0 octants.
