block octant-124

Block Octant-124

256/686

This character fills cells 1, 2, and 4 in a two-column, four-row tile. It is semigraphics: text characters used to make pictures. Kaypro computers used such tiles on text screens; Unicode encodes the patterns as characters.

Text symbol

What 𜴅 means

It made text cells act as picture tiles.

By 1984, Kaypro II software could switch pixels on and off inside fixed-width text cells. That let a text screen show rough images without a separate graphics mode.

Unicode 16.0 encoded the patterns for exchange. Terminal programs can arrange them into compact pictures when their fonts support octants.

Questions people ask

1

Why does it show as a box or blank?

The font or terminal may lack the glyph. Unicode 16.0 octants need font support; a missing drawing does not change the text character itself.
