What means
Positions 1, 2, 4, 6, 7 and 8 are filled. Semigraphics uses characters as coarse pixels; an octant divides its cell into eight blocks, leaving 3 and 5 blank here.
In the early 1980s, Kaypro computers running CP/M, an operating system, used 24 blocks for text graphics. Octants carry that mosaic idea into terminal art and charts.
Why does this glyph show as a box?
Some terminals draw octants themselves; others rely on a font.
A support check dated 2026-09-28 found octant rendering in Ghostty, Kitty and VTE, but not in urxvt or xterm.js. It tested with fonts lacking these glyphs; other setups may differ.

Questions people ask
1Why does show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
