Block Octant-1247

315/686

𜵀 is a 24 pixel tile with cells 1, 2, 4, and 7 filled. Kaypro semigraphics used these tiles to draw low-resolution pictures on text screens. “1247” maps the filled parts; neighboring tiles complete the image.

What 𜵀 means

It is one piece of a text-grid drawing. An octant is a character split into two columns and four rows. On Kaypro, software used its patches as coarse pixels, so adjoining text cells could build a larger picture.

By 1984, a Kaypro II user was building a paint program from these screen cells. As of 2026, a terminal demo shows octant pixel art and compact bar charts—the hardware workaround now doubles as an intentional text-art style.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜵀 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
