block octant-147

Block Octant-147

𜴾 is a mosaic tile: its 2-by-4 grid fills cells 1, 4 and 7. Kaypro used such characters in text-mode pictures; this pattern is one piece of a drawing, not a standalone word.

What 𜴾 means

To simulate plotted pixels in text. Kaypro software switched each of eight small cells on or off, sketching pixels inside character positions. The Kaypro II, introduced in 1982, included this form in its character set. Kaypro’s reverse-graphics group assigns it byte code F9; an old Kaypro text file needs that byte mapped to Unicode. Unicode preserves the tile for legacy text and emulators.

Questions people ask

1

Why does this character show as a box?

Usually, the selected font lacks the glyph. Terminal results checked on 2026-09-28 show uneven built-in support for legacy block characters; some terminals draw them themselves, while others rely on font coverage. A supporting font or renderer is needed.
