Block Octant-146

283/686

𜴠 is a pixel tile from Kaypro text graphics: three of its eight cells are filled. Kaypro computers used 2 4 text tiles to draw low-resolution screen pictures. A text app that lacks its glyph may show an empty placeholder.

What 𜴠 means

It turned one text character into a tiny screen-drawing tile. This pattern lights cells 1, 4, and 6 of an eight-cell grid, two across and four down; adjacent tiles can make a larger picture. The Unicode proposal maps it to Kaypro’s character set.

Kaypro computers running CP/M, an early operating system, could store block graphics in text files. In 1984, a Kaypro drawing program used the same 2 4 grid for screen art. Unicode’s 2021 proposal preserved the patterns for file conversion, emulation, and text-mode graphics.

Questions people ask

1

Why does this character appear as a box?

A replacement box means the active font or text renderer has no drawing for it. The text can still contain the correct octant character.
