What means
Cells 2, 4 and 6 are filled in this two-by-four tile.
An octant is a character cell split into eight small blocks, arranged two across and four down. Put these tiles side by side to sketch larger images in text, where each character cell stands in for a patch of pixels.
A Kaypro II, an early personal computer, had this exact pattern among its standard characters. Its semigraphics—pictures made from filled and empty character cells—let a text screen draw rough images.

Questions people ask
1Why does this octant show as a box?
The selected font may not contain this octant. For a terminal mosaic, use a monospaced font with octant coverage so the tile appears and the grid stays aligned.
