Block Octant-23457

331/686

𜵐 is a tile for semigraphics—using text characters as chunky pixels—and its name identifies five filled cells in a 2-by-4 grid. Kaypro's 1984 graphics mode used octant patterns; the 2021 Unicode proposal cited compatibility with old data, emulators, and text-mode graphics as reasons to encode the legacy set.

What 𜵐 means

Each character carried one patch of a larger image. A 1984 Kaypro graphics guide describes a cell as eight pixels in two columns and four rows, with software setting each subcell individually. That is semigraphics: chunky text characters arranged side by side to draw bigger pictures.

Technical and archival: one filled-cell pattern from a legacy text-graphics set.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜵐 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
