block octant-2347

Block Octant-2347

318/686

𜵃 fills positions 2, 3, 4, and 7 in a 24 pixel tile. In the 1980s, Kaypro and Mattel Aquarius used such blocks to draw pictures inside text cells; they still work for terminal art.

What 𜵃 means

They mark four filled cells. “Octant” means a tile split into eight: two columns by four rows. Here, 2, 3, 4, and 7 are filled.

Kaypro's 1984 guide describes each screen slot as eight pixels; inverse video (swapping light and dark) added patterns. The Mattel Aquarius character set includes this tile too.

Questions people ask

1

Why does it show as a box?

It is a display-support problem: your font or app may lack the glyph. As of 2026, some terminal emulators draw these mosaics themselves; others do not.
