What means
It is a five-cell tile for text-mode graphics, not a word. An octant is one of eight equal cells; this pattern fills cells 2, 3, 5, 7, and 8. Beside other tiles, it forms part of a coarse image.
PC-8001 semigraphics used a 24 grid on NEC's Japanese home computer, launched in 1979. Kaypro semigraphics used the same grid; a 1983 Kaypro 10 manual describes its eight-pixel characters. Kaypro's reverse-video set maps this pattern to byte 96 hex; reverse video swaps the screen's foreground and background colors. These tiles let a character screen draw images and borders from pixel groups.

Questions people ask
1Why does show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
