What means
It fills parts of one text cell to build a terminal mosaic.
An octant is one of eight parts of a character cell—the rectangle each text character occupies. Here, 2, 3, and 8 identify the filled parts, and adjacent tiles form larger pictures. Early terminals and home computers used blocks and lines for rough text graphics; Unicode's 2022 proposal extended that technique with a finer 24 grid.
Why does show as a box?
The selected font may not include its drawing. If appears blank or as a placeholder square, the underlying character is unchanged. Microsoft announced octant support in Cascadia Code in April 2024.

Questions people ask
1Why does show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
