block octant-248

Block Octant-248

373/686

𜵺 is a text-picture tile, filling three cells of a 24 grid. Kaypro computers used such blocks to draw graphics in character rows. The same grid can make small terminal art today, if supported.

Text symbol

What 𜵺 means

It fills selected cells in a text-grid picture. In Kaypro CP/M graphics, the numbers 2, 4 and 8 mark this tile’s filled cells.

A Unicode proposal from 2021 documents these 24 tiles in Kaypro’s text files. Octants extend the older quadrant and sextant block-grid idea.

Why might this show up blank?

Some terminals still lack support for octant blocks. As of 2026, Ghostty and Kitty render them; xterm.js does not.

Each tile can still contribute to a larger terminal picture.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜵺 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
